Mercedes

This 1938 Mercedes 540K 5 passenger cabriolet (#169394) reputedly was captured in Egypt after the war, and shipped to Rome by James Heyworth-Dunne, an adviser to Field Marshal Earl Wavell. It was subsequently imported by him to the U.S. (see D.C. registration certificate below - customs document also available). It was offered for sale in 1951 through Werner Maeder, the legendary chief mechanic of the legendary Zumbach Motor Repair Co. (as an aside, when I lived in N.Y. in the fifties, I lived on the same block as Max Hoffmann's Mercedes Garage on 76th street and went to school on 54th street & Fifth Ave. only two blocks from Zumbach's at 127 W. 53d Street.). Like many sports car enthusiasts, my father liked to hang around Zumbach's just to see what was happening and who showed up. My father bought the 540 and we had it for four years. 8 cylinder 5.4 Liter Supercharged and BIG. I still have the original fitted luggage (two pieces) to this car and one eighteen inch wire wheel and tire, all of which I'd like to sell.
