Volume and type of documents
How many and what kind of documents will you want your system to handle? Is yours a business with little need to image documents, except for the part of the month when everything needed to be done yesterday? or is some part of every day currently devoted to photocopying checks and filing papers?
Understanding the volume, and the load, of documents to be scanned tells you about the speed and capacity of the scanner you need. And it will tell you what kind of resources you have available and need to apply to the task of indexing.
Some scanners do not handle small documents well, but they're fine for business size paper. Some scanners image one side, others both sides simultaneously.
